  1. Hi Monica,
I;ve only recently stumbled on to Ruth’s story and read and studied it with great sympathy for both her and her family. After the uncuccesful appeal of December 2003 has there been any further developments and how is Muriel and her family? Is there any way of contacting her or any other surviving member of the family? Hope to hear from you soon!
    Yours.

    • Hello Khalid

Thank you for your message.I will pass on your good wishes to Muriel in due course. As you may appreciate I am not in a position to give out her contact details. I have taken on the fight to clear Ruth’s name and appreciate support from anyone. Thank you for your interest.

  2. Dear Mrs Weller,

I have recently read the book you and Mrs Jakubait penned, and could not put it down. As a student of criminology, I have always had an interest in Ruth’s case, but was utterly blown away by some of the revelations you were able to make. I would also like to add that prior to reading your book, I had my nose stuck in Christine Keeler’s book The Truth At Last; the similarities in Ruth and Christine’s backgrounds and characters are hard to ignore – as are the annecdotes regarding Stephen Ward.
There was one part in particular which interested me – and that was the mention of tapes which Ruth had recorded and which were subsequently aired on radio in the 70s. I was wondering if you could tell me some of what was said on these tapes or if there is anyway one could find out what they revealed.
I applaud the work you and Mrs Jakubait have done to clear Ruth’s name and hope that the details uncovered in the book will come to replace the typical story which has been put about for the past 53 years. Please pass on my best wishes to Mrs Jakubait and let her know that there are still people out there, who, although born well after Ruth’s death, are keen to see her named cleared.
    Yours Sincerely

    Lynsey

  3. Please could you let me know if you give talks for organisations.
We run a small WI group in Great Hampden which is quite close to Amersham and have always
had an interest in the Ruth Ellis Story.
Please let me know if you would be prepared to visit us.

    Many thanks.

  4. HI MONICA

I HAVE BEEN ADMIRING YOUR EFFORT TO CLEAN RUTH’S NAME BECAUSE I ALSO STRONGLY BELIEVE IN HER INNOCENCE.HER CASE SHOCKED AND MOVED ME A LOT,AS LONG AS MOVED ME THE BENTLEY CASE.I ALSO BELIEVE THESE TWO STORIES MUST BE FILMED AGAIN WITH NEW VERSION AND NEW ELEMENTS.
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU IF YOUR BOOK HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED IN GREEK LANGUAGE,BECAUSE IM GREEK AND I DO NOT FIND ANY BOOK HERE ABOUT RUTH.
ONE MORE QUESTION PLEASE.WHY RUTH DID NOTHING TO SAVE HER LIFE?EVEN IN THE LAST MOMENT TO REVEAL THE CONSPIRACY?EVEN TO FIND WAY TO DELAY THE EXECUTION?WHY DID SHE GIVE UP?

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY

    MARIA

    • Hello Maria
I appreciate your thoughts about Ruth Ellis’s innocence. It’s very important to receive feedback from people like you about my campaign to clear Ruth’s name, so thank you for that. The more people talk about the injustice, the more the word will spread.
I am not sure if our book has been published in Greek but will ask our publisher.
Is Ruth Ellis’s name widely known in your country?
“Why Ruth did nothing to save her life….etc?” I can only answer your questions when my audience is big enough and ready to receive them – not before.
      Best wishes
      Monica Weller

  5. HELLO MONICA

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DIRECT AND QUICK ANSWER.ACTUALLY,I AM TEACHER AND I HAVE SPOKEN OCCASIONALLY TO MY STUDENTS,ABOUT RUTH AND BENTLEY AND THE FORMER BRITISH LAW SYSTEM.IT IS AMAZING HOW EASILY AND THOUGHTLESSLY,IN 50’S PROSECUTION WAS SENDING PEOPLE,SOMETIMES COMPLETELY INNOCENT,TO THE GALLOWS.I REMEMBER ONCE,SOME OF MY STUDENTS BROKE IN TEARS AND THEY COULD NOT STOP,WHILE I WAS TELLING THEM THAT RUTH LEFT BEHIND TWO SMALL CHILDREN….
YES,HERE ELLIS’S NAME IS WIDELY KNOWN AND PERSONALLY I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE,FRIENDS,FAMILIARS KNOWING ELLIS CASE,EXPRESSING SPECIAL INTERESTING,
BUT HERE UNFORTUNATELLY THERE IS NOT, I THINK, BOOKS ABOUT THESE STORIES.
HOWEVER,I WOULD APRECIATE MUCH IF WOULD INFORM ME,EVEN THROW MY EMAIL,ABOUT THE QUESTIONS I ASKED FOR.
PLEASE, FORGIVE ME FOR MY ENGLISH.

    YOURS SINCERELY

    MARIA

  6. Hi Monica

I am presently presenting a series of lectures on the history of british ( perceived )crime, and have found that Ruths case is proving to be the most involving in regards to audience interest. It came to me as a test case some years ago when I first began my degree in criminology with the OPEN UNIVERSITY. At first I feel that I fell into the vein of the open and shut case and as such left it at that. But being subsequently involved in the Saville inquirey into the events of ‘Bloody Sunday’ in Derry in 1972 ( my wifes father was murdered that day ) I have since revisited Ruths case and have felt it nessesary to get in contact to possibly discuss some aspects of Ruths case.

    Best regards

    Martin

  7. HELLO MONICA
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU,IF THERE IS POSSIBILITY TO HAVE ACCESS INTO NEWSPAPERS BY THAT TIME OF RUTH’S TRIAL,CONVICTION AND EXECUTION TO SEE PHOTOS AND READ ARTICLES.PLEASE, IF YOU KNOW THE WAY,LET ME KNOW.
HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR PUBLISHER ABOUT THE TRANSLATION OF YOUR BOOK? PLEASE LET ME KNOW ALSO.

    MY BEST WISHES TO YOU

    MARIA

  8. Hi Monica,

the book is testament to Muriel’s work and your fearless researching – its convincing because of the endless mistakes and mysteries made by our Justice System, surrounding the affair. WHAT IF ENOUGH OF US BELIEVE YOURS AND MURIELS’ VERSION…….

    well done, Lindsey

    • Hi Lindsey.
Some while ago I was given this advice: that to get justice for Ruth Ellis I must first win in the court of public opinion.
      Your comment is much appreciated.
      Please spread the word.
      Monica Weller

  9. HI MS. WELLER,
COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME. WOULD YOU KNOW AFTER ALL YOUR RESEARCH INTO RUTH ELLIS IF SHE WAS CONFIRMED AS A 13 YEAR OLD IN RHYL? I HAVE COME ACROSS A COMMUNION BOOK THAT HAS INSCRIBED TO RUTH ELLIS IN MEMORY OF HER CONFIRMATION. THE BOOK IS DATED 1939.
I HOPE YOU MAYBE ABLE TO HELP,
    YOURS,
    DAVID

    • Hello Mr Tompkins
I really couldn’t say. Ruth and her family had left Rhyl years earlier; they moved to the Basingstoke area when Ruth was still very young, roamed around there from village to village until wartime when the family eventually moved to south-east London. As far as I know they didn’t return to Rhyl. You may find, with your own research, that it was a totally different Ruth Ellis.
Sorry I can’t be of more help.

  11. People may well ask why, after over half a century some details are still kept closed. My own thoughts are and always have been that there was more to this case than was actually put forward at The Old Bailey in 1955. In my opininon this was more of a political case than anything else.

One has to also consider the perceived “Moral” and “class” structure of the post war Tory government – which also extended to the QCs and judges of that era (Melford Stevenson did not appear to have a great deal of empathy for his client if most of what I have read is factual).

    In 1955 Appearances were everything.

  12. Will you sign my copy of your book when it comes through to me Monica ? Can’t wait to read it. I have already read Georgie Ellis and Robert Hancock’s account.
I didn’t know until recently that Georgie had died – may Georgie, her brother Andre and all the other Ellis relations who tragically died since Ruth’s sad end, also RIP !!!

    • Ian
You have asked me many questions about: the media; Christmas Humphreys; David Blakely;Carol Findlater and Desmond Cussen. And have made comments about Ruth Ellis’s family being the bravest of brave;about Profumo; Lady Godiva and my definite views on the subject of Ruth Ellis.

When you have read RUTH ELLIS MY SISTER’S SECRET LIFE you will be able to work out some answers for yourself.

By all means mail your copy of the book to our publisher Constable and Robinson in London – address on the internet – and ask them to kindly forward it to me for signing, making sure you include postage.

  13. Dear Monica

I am an English teacher working in …. and through one of my student’s interest in the name, Travers Christmas Humphreys, I found the summary of your book on, https://copperknob.wordpress.com/category/melford-stevenson/. Unfortunately, the book is not available here, but your website summary was fascinatingly engaging. I have to admit, now rather shamefacedly, that I had never previously given much thought to the case, but now I am as convinced as yourself and many others that the trial was a sham to save the blushes of the so-called ‘Establishment’. Your tireless, exhaustive, unstinting efforts and the ensuing results are to be sincerely and heartily congratulated; an excellent peace of investigative writing. Furthermore, I have always been suspicious of Ward’s suicide just prior to sentencing, and would now conclude that it was also done to silence another, possibly incriminating, voice.

If there are doubtful minds concerning the case of Ruth Ellis and the depths of duplicity to which the powers-at-be will stoop, then I would recommend a viewing of ‘The Bank Job’ (2008). The film is another testament to the deep seated belief that the image of ‘Britannia’ be upheld and protected, at any cost, no matter who suffers by paying the ultimate price.

Again, many thanks for your fortitude,

    Sincerely

    Graham

  14. Hi Monica I have read Muriels book “My Sisters Secret Life” and have passed on to others to read – all of us are appalled at the underhandedness of high society and using an innocent woman as a scapegoat. I trust Muriel is still fighting Ruth’s corner? I am passing on the truth as best I can

  15. Dear Monica,
I have just seen something in an auction catalogue that may be of interest to you. In researching the lot I have come across your blog and read it thoroughly and intend now to read the book!
The item in question is a pair of watercolours by a certain Stephen Ward! They are of an auburn haired young lady by the name of Ruth Ellis. The best bit is that they are signed and and dated 1941. If these are genuine (I intend to enquire with the action house with regards to provenance), they surely prove that Ward knew Ellis in the forties.
They are for sale at Ewbank Clarke Gammon Wellers Auctioneers in Surrey http://www.ewbankauctions.co.uk lot 1212 on 29th June – 1st July. Should I find any other information of use I will be in touch.
    best wishes,
    David.

    • Thank you David for this. It’s a good lot number isn’t it – 1212? Think about it.
Maybe my message of putting the story straight will be heard by a few more people.
      Monica

    • Surely Ruth would have been still been with her family in 1941 aged 15 or 16 yrs old, and her name would have been Ruth Hornby or Neilson. I thought she only married George Ellis in 1950, so why is she called Ruth Ellis on these drawings by Ward from 1941 ?

I thought that Stephen Ward started to get to know Ruth when she was on the set of Lady Godiva Rides Again [1951] – am I correct ?

      Just a thought !!!!

      • Ruth was NEVER a Hornby; she was Neilson. I really don’t want to comment on the sketches other than the fact someone emailed them to me several years ago.

Ruth married George Ellis towards the end of 1950. From my research she already knew Stephen Ward – and visited the White Hart hotel in Brasted with him. Ruth also knew George before she ‘officially’ met him in a London club in 1950 – he was a regular customer at the White Hart in Brasted. I think we make both these points in our book.

However I am prepared to share this with you: I have uncovered evidence that Ruth was in Stephen Ward’s circle immediately after the 2nd World War.

  16. All extreemly interesting and a sorry tale. I wonder if to speculate on what might have happened in a fictional novel, which no doubt would be sucessful, could shake the tree as it were. Even taking the period in time in question, this level of coruption and cover up and her willingness to go along with it all You must speculate

  17. Hi Monica,

I’m currently reading My Sisters Secret Life and its been very interesting so far, although heart-breaking at times. The horror of the “elites” of society preying on and driving a woman into vulnerability to protect Their interests and secrets is sickening. Do you think this kind of thing could still be happening in the UK? And if so, perhaps more prevalent, within the political and business circles, creating scapegoats of vulnerable or individual thinking people to protect their hold on power?

I would be interested to hear what you think and I’ll continue reading, and also other versions to get a view of the (often very) different perspectives.

    Good luck,

    Stuart R

  18. David – I didn’t think Ruth married George Ellis until 1950, so therefore would still be Ruth Hornby in 1941. Am I correct Monica ? Just a thought !!!

  19. Thanks Monica but surey logic speaks volumes here, if she was Ruth Neilson in 1941 then surely we can speculate she wasn’t Ruth Ellis because she was Ruth Neilson [and more importantly hadn’t yet married George Ellis]. Its not rocket science yet, anyway.

  20. Hi Monica, your research has at last exposed the truth. which i knew was out there somewhere,i never felt the story held water. My late mother always insisted Ruth was innocent – although she only met her a few times. So As a person who has followed this story from a certain personal connection… I would like to personally thank you for revealing that this lady as not the cold blooded killer we are supposed to believe, but in truth a vulnerable, and abused young woman, who in the end showed a courage that most, do not have. We all feel a great sadness for the lost life of someone who,was most without doubt the victim of a conspiracy. The Film,”Dance with a stranger” being just commercial rubbish, did not promote or seek the truth… Perhaps when they make the REAL documentary or film, i will compose the music.-it would be my pleasure.
Thank you again for your amazing detective work, and enlightenment.

  21. Hiya Monica, For My A Level History Coursework I have created the question of, ‘Assess the short term significance of the case of Ruth Ellis for bringing about a change in the law of capital punishment.’ I would love to use this as a source but would need the Home Office’s origional statement as this is not a contemporary source of the time- is there anyway I could find this?
    Thank you,
    Victoria.

  22. I recently read your and Muriel’s book which I found fascinating. In the appendix there is a letter requesting the tape recording of Ruth from the solicitors Mr. Bickford worked for. I’ve heard extracts of theses tapes in a 2018 BBC documentary, ‘The Ruth Ellis Files’, and have read the transcripts in Carol Lee’s book, but would very much like to actually listen to them in their entirety. I wonder if you know how I’d go about hearing these. If it required some work to put the recordings online I’d be willing to make a small donation.
I find Ruth’s story tragic but I hope she has now been accepted into Heaven and is with her family there.

  23. Greetings Ms. Weller,
I was wondering if you had any thoughts about the Wallace Case from 1931?William Herbert Wallace was convicted of killing his wife in 1931. Later on the conviction was quashed – first time in English history. Please let me know your opinion
    Thank you very much.

    • Hello Bruce, thank you for your comment. No, I hadn’t heard about this case. it sounds interesting. I’ll try to read up about it but am quite busy at the moment. Wishing you a peaceful and safe Christmas. Monica Weller
