RUTH ELLIS – Pregnancies and abortion update

Hospital Case PaperAfter the shooting of David Blakely outside the Magdala pub in Hampstead on 10th April 1955, Ruth Ellis told the police that she had recently suffered a miscarriage caused by being punched in the stomach by Blakely.

Holloway Prison Hospital Case Papers were released at The National Archives in 2006. On 11th April 1955 between 5.10 pm and 5.43 pm Ruth was examined by the prison doctor, in which he says Ruth was ‘very cooperative to examination’ and: ‘States her operation scar is due to a tubal pregnancy about a year ago. States that one month ago she had an abortion at two months pregnancy and now has a vaginal discharge.’

Unless material she [Ruth Ellis]does not want too much detail – particularly relating to previous pregnancies referred to below – to come out.”
